Meet Nigeria fast rising portrait and wedding photographer; EvanMicky
Today we’d like you to introduce you to EvanMicky, one of the fast rising portrait and wedding photographer in Nigeria.
EvanMicky, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
First of all, my real name is Michael Bassey. I am from Akwa Ibom state, Nigeria…Evan Micky is the brand. I’m a visual storyteller and a content creator in Nigeria. I’m a graduate of Electronic and communication Engineering. I got my first camera in 2013. I was still in University as at the time. Actually, my junior brother purchased a digital camera at a promo price online. When I got home, I noticed he had less use for it so i bought it from him at a very ridiculously cheap price. I used that camera (canon 1200d) till 2018 when i was done with my Nation youth service corp (NYSC) year.
I took my camera to camp and i was so fortunate to be chosen as the official photographer and cinematographer in camp. I was actually shooting for the fun of it and see smiles on people’s faces when the see a magnificent image of themselves. It gave me so much joy.
I honestly had no idea that this was something I would grow a passion for. In 2019, I purchased a better camera and decided to become a better photographer. I never pictured myself being here but right from childhood I have been a lover of art. In secondary school, Often times I create portraits of parents and some students with poster colours. So I can say, it’s always been there. I grew up in the time when culture and self service expression was way to tell a story.
*We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?*
Frankly; this road has not been so smooth… there’s been ups and downs here and there like every other business. I still find myself striving to get better everyday. I actually got to where i am today because i surround myself with people who don’t mind staring fear and moving forward anyway. I am learning to have faith in my process and keep moving even when i make mistakes.
*So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the EvanMicky Photography*
For me, I look for what my clients are trying to say beyond the words. I look for facial expressions or candid expressions that make them who they are. I currently shoot newborn, portraits and Weddings. I’m known for my portrait photography. One of the things that makes me most proud as an artist is the fact that I have been able to travel doing what I love. Photography has allowed me to touch parts of the Nigeria that I wouldn’t normally have access to. For that, I am grateful.
*Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?*
I won’t call it luck, I know that when preparedness meets opportunity one can feel like the luckiest ever. I don’t think anyone just stumbles into success without being in the space of intentionality and knowing what your purpose is.
It’s not luck…It’s Grace!
